Military Corfam Shoes - I watched the HBO series Westworld a few months ago. If you haven't seen the series, it's a drama series set in the American Old West. Except it's not the Old West, it's the future. A future where humanoid robots serve real people who live out their imaginations in some kind of giant theme park. Robots are practically indistinguishable from humans. They are often not human like the "artificial" in the Alien movies. This is perfect for HBO because they can hire real actors to play the robots. In the show, you will find that people have problems. Deep questions. So do the robots. And it ends badly for people.

Making a robot look, move and think like a human is a difficult challenge. At this point, we are not even close to someone asking: "Is this a beautiful woman or a robot?". AI must evolve. Robot agility requires significant improvements. And skins are especially difficult to replicate. Human skin is stretched in certain ways. It has a characteristic feel to the touch. Who would like a hot robot selfie on Instagram if the robot had weird skin coverings? Well, some people, but not all of us.

In the 1960s, DuPont tried to solve a similar problem to synthetic leather when they researched and developed an unpleasant synthetic (poromer) leather that the company named Korfam. It needs to look, feel and work like real leather. just fine And DuPont wanted it to be the material that dominated the shoe industry. DuPont spent $100 million ($600 million in 2017) developing and marketing the product, which was launched in 1964. It was a product of the space age for the space age.

In short, Korfam is not a substitute for leather. Consumers are still choosing the real thing with their feet. And in 1971, DuPont discontinued the product and bought the capital. RIP Corfam. Another Pormer product from Goodrich called "Aztran" was also finished at the same time. It turns out that "there is a big future in plastic", not true for shoes (Catherine Ross, WOW). Other Pormer products are still produced and used in military or golf boots, but none are known as Corfam.

Since 2015 I have been looking for a pair in good condition or NOS Corfam in my size. I was interested in materials and history. Top shoe manufacturers such as Nettleton, Nunnbush, Hanover, Stetson and even Edwin Klepp produced Corfam shoes. DuPont promoted and subsidized the use of the product (see ads below). I specifically wanted the Nettleton pair because it was Nettleton. I have never seen a Fluorshim or Alden model used by Corfam.

I found a pair of quality Crosby Squares in lightly used condition and in my size. Below is a picture of the pair when I bought them. I doubt they wore it for 40 years.

What was my first impression of Corfam shoes? They were more leather than not. The soles, feet and linings were leather. And that the upper looks more like plastic than leather. It had unique, unnatural Korfam East-West covers on vamp. The shoes also smell like plastic.

Another reason I wanted a pair was to wear them. I haven't actually found any early accounts of Korpham wearing it. Some people online mentioned that the Korpham shoes were hot and uncomfortable. But I doubt it was from real experience since DuPont stopped selling the material in 1971. How bad can they be? DuPont has made significant investments in product engineering. And everything we read is not true. At least that's what someone claimed.

First I needed to get the pair ready to wear. Old Korpham advertisements claimed it was a miracle material that only needed to be cleaned for maintenance. I believe this statement is true. The shoes are easy to clean with a little brushing and a damp cloth. I did not use nail polish on them.

Corfam's advertisements also state that the material is abrasion resistant. But my shoes are worn after what appears to be very limited use. After working on them, some surface scratches are removed, but deep scratches on corfum cannot be easily repaired or covered. They were carved into plastic.

The shoes were well made. The quality of construction and materials was similar to high-end shoes of the era.

After the shoes were cleaned, I ate several times a week. Honestly, I've never liked the look of "leather" tops, they look like plastic to me (which they are). I'm proud of my shoes (snabbish, I know), but when I wore this pair of Crosby Squares, I tried not to look too down.

The shoes fit well and were generally comfortable. They already felt broken. I don't need to put any band aids on my feet at the end of the day. My feet were also never sweaty and the material really "breathes". When I first put the shoes on, the vamp tape dug into my foot when standing. It didn't hurt, but it was visible. It got better after a few hours.

Another notable difference between Korpham and leather is that Korpham uppers do not stretch like leather when worn. It's hard to explain the difference, but it was noticeable during wear. They always felt a little tight. It's like plastic shoes.

When I looked at the shoes from above, the color of the upper did not grow on me. I liked the shape of the shoes. They remind me of the Allen Edmonds 7 - the latter used in their McNeil model. I asked a stylish lady in my office to give her opinion on the shoes (yes, I'm that thin) and she said they fit her. She was surprised when I told her that the upper skin was artificial.

At the end of the day, I had to make a surprising decision whether to enter the shoe tree. Are plastic shoes necessary? I ended up using them because most of the shoes were real leather.

May I suggest you find and buy a pair of Korpham shoes? No, spend/waste your money on other couples. I recommend watching Westworld even though that future will probably never come true. My belief is that if/when robots come for us, they won't look like humans. And I'm sure he won't be wearing flip-flops.
